A Brief History

There has been a house dominating the village of Carlton since the Norman Conquest and this has been passed down entirely by inheritance to the present Duke of Norfolk’s family since Domesday.

The present house was begun in 1614, extended in the 18th century and again in the early part of the 19th century. Its transformation from merely Carlton Hall into a house worthy of the title “Towers” took place from 1871 to 1877 and is the legacy of one man, Henry 9th Lord Beaumont. It was his dream to create the greatest of all Victorian country houses, a dream he achieved with his architects, A.W. Pugin, whose father was responsible for the Houses of Parliament, and Sir John Francis Bentley who designed Westminster Cathedral.

The carved woodwork, metal-work and painted decorations are masterpieces of Victorian craftsmanship and the large amount of stained glass contains a wealth of heraldic features.

Today it is this gothic splendour that makes Carlton Towers such a perfect setting for a whole range of corporate functions and private entertainments. Guests can enjoy the hospitality of one of England’s greatest country houses, a house that is the loved family home of Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard and their family.
